Why Is Russian Consignment of 20 Containers Arriving in Fiji Port Under Cloudy Circumstances?

"The Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence and Foreign Affairs has expressed outrage at the arrival of a Russian consignment of 20 containers where it is understood that the Police has been barred from monitoring the offloading of these containers by a private security firm, Home Link Security Services Limited.

“Why is a private security company owned by about 2,000 Territorial Force members and ex-servicemen including board member representation from officers in the RFMF usurping the role of the Police which is to manage the internal security of the nation?” queried Hon Ratu Isoa Tikoca. What’s all the secrecy about and who is really in charge of our Internal Security?

Ratu Isoa said this was highly irregular and he understood that the consignment of 20 containers from Russia consisted of arms, 2 trucks and a helicopter which needs to be explained to the people by the Minister for Defence and discussed in Parliament.

Two Russian general cargo vessels Solidat (call sign: UBEE) and St Confidence (call sign: UESZ) were due to arrive today."

$50,000 Chinese bribe to SDL Party: The Chinese (like the Indo-Fijians) are masters in masi polo - irrespective of which party is in power: "The businessman, a representative of a Taiwan company, told us he was approached at his home in early January [2007] by a policeman who told him "a gift to the RFMF would be greatly appreciated."  He hopes the police or the RFMF will not press him any further, noting that he went through a similar experience a few months ago with the Qarase government. In response to numerous requests, his [Chinese] company, whose main customer is a government-owned firm, made a FJ$50,000 donation to the SDL party in the run up to the May 2006 elections." - Former US Ambassador Larry Dinger, 2007

Shakedown of Chinese Businessmen? "The RFMF proudly proclaimed January 13 that it had received donations of flat screen TVs and other items from "two grateful Fiji Taiwanese community members." The two persons, the chairmen of the "Fiji Chinese Culture Center," and the "Taiwanese Fiji Overseas Association," respectively, told reporters the gifts were in response to the military's efforts to maintain stability and peace in Fiji. A contact in the Chinese business community suggested a different explanation might be possible. The businessman, a representative of a Taiwan company, told us he was approached at his home in early January by a policeman who told him "a gift to the RFMF would be greatly appreciated." The businessman insisted he had not yet made any donations. He hopes the police or the RFMF will not press him any further, noting that he went through a similar experience a few months ago with the Qarase government. In response to numerous requests, his company, whose main customer is a government-owned firm, made a FJ$50,000 donation to the SDL party in the run up to the May elections." - US ambassador Larry Dinger to Washington, 15 January 2007

INTERIM FINANCE MINISTER MAHENDRA CHAUDHRY DEFENDS VISA-FREE ACCESS FOR CHINESE

Fiji's Daily Post,  3 September, 2007

Interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry says the fact that Chinese nationals can come into the country now without any visa will not be a threat the country.

Chaudhry's comments follow concerns raised by certain sectors of the
community who are worried that exempting Chinese nationals from visa
requirements to enter the country might backfire. Some say that experiences involving Chinese nationals was not "a healthy sign".

Major religious groups are already predicting a rise in underground prostitution and mafia-type dealings if the system is not checked properly. But Chaudhry said yesterday he did not see any possible threat because the Chinese nationals would also have to adhere to immigration rules and policies.

"Everyone who comes to Fiji regardless of their colour, gender or where they come from have to meet the appropriate laws and regulations before they can enter Fiji. It is the responsibility of the Immigration and Customs Authority to ensure that we don't have any illegal immigrant into this country," he said.

"I know recently some people have been exaggerating in allowing Chinese nationals from mainland China without visas and this will pose a major danger. But I think if the appropriate authorities responsible in Fiji keep alert then there should not be problem as such."

He said it was not right to discriminate against a particular race of people and make decisions on false predictions.

Chaudhry said the law would deal with any Chinese who broke the law, adding that the police, customs and immigration officials had to play their role.

"The relevant government officials, police and the immigration have an important role to play in this and if they do their jobs properly than I don't see any major problem," Chaudhry added.

Coupist Bainimarama's MONEY MAN seeking alternative partners to beat sanctions:
"Like Prime Minister Bainimarama's efforts the previous week at the Forum in Tonga, [Mahendra] Chaudhry's meetings in Washington were carefully orchestrated to visibly seek out alternative partners in the face of censure and sanctions from the likes of the United States, Australia and New Zealand...
Chaudhry's office issued a series of press statements during the week on his Washington meetings portraying him as dynamically pressing for economic and technical assistance for Fiji. Chaudhry, whose single entry visa restricted him to Washington and environs, made full use of the World Bank and IMF gatherings to generate the sort of self-serving, often over-stated publicity he has become known for, flying off to the wider world to lobby for economic advantage...In Washington for meetings of the IMF and World Bank, Fiji Interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry made full use of the opportunity to reach out to potential new partners and to USG contacts as well. Chaudhry's calls on IMF, Brazilian, Indian, Malaysian, Chinese, and other contacts played on the interim regime's theme of finding alternative -- and less critical -- partners in the face of sanctions from its traditional allies. The meeting with Exim Bank of China Assistant President Zhu Xinqian concerned the concessional loan offer made by PRC Premier Wen Jiabao during his April 2006 visit to Fiji." -

Larry Dinger on Bainimarama's Interim Finance Minister Chaudhry; now
Fiji is ripping the seed sowed by these 2006 coup sycophants! Chaudhry would still have been Bainimarama's master showman if it had not been for Mohammed Aziz and Pita Driti - these two finally kicked him out of Cabinet in 2008 after he was found to be hiding $2million in his secret Australian bank account while managing Fiji's economy and negotiating financial deals with Chinese and other pro-coup governments!

Mahendra Chaudhry to Larry Dinger: "This 2006 coup is different because the Qarase Government was so awful...
Fiji could not have survived another five years."

"Mahendra Chaudhry, former PM deposed by the 2000 coup and still head of the FLP, phoned today to let the Ambassador know he intends to accept Bainimarama's offer of the Finance, Public Enterprises, and Sugar Reform portfolios. He put it in terms of having to move Fiji forward and get back to democracy ASAP. When the Ambassador noted how disastrous the past coups had been for Fiji and for Chaudhry personally on two occasions, Chaudhry suggested this coup is different because the Qarase Government was so awful..."Fiji could not have survived another five years." Interim Finance Minister Chaudhry is showing his vindictive side. Under the interim government, Chaudhry crony Vayeshnoi is Sports Minister and Chaudhry son Rajendra is on the FSC board. We comment on a worry that the Indian High Commission and many in the Indo-Fijian population are applauding a highly dangerous game of "pay back" with the ethnic-Fijian community...We suggested that any obvious Indo-Fijian enthusiasm for the RFMF would be playing with fire. Since then there have been many instances of Indo-Fijians complaining to the RFMF about ethnic-Fijians and of RFMF troops then enforcing street justice with no due process. To date, nothing has exploded into flame, but there is certainly a danger of "pay back" reversing course with tragic consequences. "

TRUE but the Chaudhrys should NOT have rushed to prop up the dictator resulting in the destruction of everything native Fijian in Fiji!

HASTY ASSESSMENT: "Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Interim Attorney General and Minister for Justice. Khaiyum, a Muslim, is a young Suva lawyer who was General Counsel of the Colonial Group of Companies, President of the Fiji Young Lawyers Association, and a board member of Transparency International Fiji. His brother Riaz is a TV journalist in New Zealand. Khaiyum has had an excellent reputation. While a student at the University of Hong Kong in 2001, he wrote an open letter decrying corruption within the Fiji Muslim League. After the swearing in, Khaiyum said his portfolio includes "anti-corruption and electoral reform." He said there is no specific time frame for elections."
