REST IN PEACE: BLAST FROM THE PAST - Mrs HARI SHANKAR lived through racial horrors of Rabuka's 1987 coups, and much more...SHE departed from this world 10 October - on Fiji's 50th Independence Day
The late Sama Shankar was the sister of the late SIR VIJAY SINGH, the former Speaker of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and Attorney General who was part of the Alliance Party delegation to London in 1970 that negotiated Fiji's Independence from Great Britain. He was detained after Rabuka's racist coups and his passport seized, prompting him to ask: “What kind of normalcy is [Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau] thinking about when things like this happen.” For sometime Sir Vijay was declared a persona non grata by Rabuka, as if FIJI belonged to HIM. While Sir Vijay died in New Zealand from cancer in September 2006, Mrs Shankar - 97 years old - died peacefully at her Flagstaff home in Suva on 10 October 2020, 50 years to the day her brother had negotiated our independence.
