The former NFP leader Jai Ram Reddy's nominee on the CRC, the late Professor Brij Lal, it has emerged recently was NOT even a Fiji citizen. He had renounced his citizenship and had taken Australian and American passports in 1993 and 1995 respectively. So, Indo-Fijians didn't have a local representative from Fiji to counter Rabuka's nominee Tomasi Vakatora. Vakatora was formerly a member of the cabinet sub-committee whose recommendations had formed the basis of the racist 1990 Constitution. For twenty-five years we were under the impression that the late Professor Brij Lal was holding on to his Fiji citizenship with permanent residency status in Australia. We were wrong. Again, we won't be stifled by spurious retort that 'Dead Man Tell No Tales'. Facts are Facts. In other words, the 1997 Constitution was drafted by two foreigners (Professor Brij Lal and Sir Paul Reeves) and the local one and his family were major debtors to Rabuka's collapsed National Bank of Fiji
"When the telephone call came in early March 1995 from Jai Ram Reddy, Fiji's Leader of the Opposition and the long term leader of the Indo-Fijian community, asking me to be his nominee on the Constitution Review Commission, I was naturally overwhelmed. The appointment was not unexpected." Professor Brij Lal | Goodbye Fiji |
