Fijileaks: Warning - Graphic Image of blood soaked and injured Gerber

BY VICTOR LAL

JEAN Pierre Gerber, 68, was left unconscious in a pool of blood with wounds to his throat from a screwdriver stab. The attacker, an identified Fijian man of strong, big built, is still at large and police have not yet investigated the matter.

The incident took place at Fantasy Island on Sunday November 6 at 11pm. The attacker approached the victim for a cigarette. The victim turned his back to look for his cigarette pack when the attacker started punching his head repeatedly. When the victim fell, the attacker grabbed a screwdriver and stabbed his throat, indicating intention to murder.

Once the victim was unconscious, the attacker took a laptop, phone and his cash.  Police were unresponsive to the emergency calls and neither was the usual security guard on duty. Gerber is currently admitted in a critical condition at the Lautoka hospital.

Gerber has been in Fiji from the 1980s and is well liked amongst his community, who has always been an advocate for peace.

He was previously the manager for Treasure Island and Dominion Hotels and worked for many years at the Hideaway Resort, moving on to open his own restaurant Le Cafe in Sigatoka. His business for the last 20 years employs 100% local Fijian workforce.

His daughter Sarah Conrad imports a Fijian branded water to Dubai and she sends the proceeds back to help build homes for the poor.

It is a sad day indeed to witness a kind, humble and good hearted man being subject to such heinous acts.

The attacker is still at large.

Issues over content in Fiji Broadcasting Corporation’s Wasea Bhasha programme have been politicized says FBC Chief Executive Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the company believes it has taken appropriate action and it’s time to move on.

He adds he is not surprised that the matter has been picked up by political parties and commentators.

“We are after all the national broadcaster and we were expecting the usual suspects to spin this into a political issue and true to form they have made it into a political issue.”

Sayed-Khaiyum also responded to calls for his resignation by Social Democratic Liberal Party Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa.

SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL: Now, FBC CEO Riyaz Khaiyum says his IDIOT comment was directed at Rajendra Chaudhry, Shailendra Raju and Fiji Exposed Forum; wants Fiji TV to retract story, claiming 'distortion'

HERE WE GO AGAIN: 'Riyaz Khaiyum says his very specific response was to a very specific question about individuals and a group page that are known to be fervently anti-Fiji and anti‑Fijian government'.
But what about Wasea Bhasha insulting native Fijians on FBC TV?

PictureScreaming at Fiji TV does not shift responsibility from you if we are to apply the Fiji Times precedent - the buck stops at the top
Public service broadcaster, FBC CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum gave Fiji One till close of business yesterday to retract a FBC TV story run by Fiji One and to apologise for the inaccuracy and harm the Fiji One reporter and his story has caused the FBC and Sayed-Khaiyum.

In a letter to the Fiji TV CEO, Geoffrey Smith yesterday, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that the story about FBC’s media conference on Fiji TV on Friday night started off by saying...”Fiji broadcasting CEO Riyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum has bluntly shifted the blame to Nemani Bainivalu the host and producer of the controversial TV show Wasea Bhasha. The state Broadcaster has removed the host in an attempt to put the contentious debacle to rest”.

Sayed-Khaiyum says it seems the Fiji TV reporter in his haste to create further controversy about the issue has now got himself in a situation whereby he has deliberately twisted and manipulated the details of the media conference and got the facts of the story absolutely wrong.

Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says he did not “bluntly shift the blame”.

He says FBC dealt with the serious matter and held responsible the person who wrote and made the irresponsible remarks on the show with subsequent action taken after a thorough investigation process.

The FBC CEO says this is a blatant disregard for basic media ethics and principles on the part of the Fiji One reporter.

Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says his comments “I’d rather not comment about idiots” was a response that was in specific reference to two individuals and a face book group page.

He says he had asked the reporter who were making the comments on social media about Wasea Bhasha and he specifically mentioned Fiji Exposed Forum, Rajendra Chaudhry and Shalendra Raju.

Sayed-Khaiyum says his very specific response was to a very specific question about individuals and a group page that are known to be fervently anti Fiji and anti‑Fijian government. He says it is these specific people that he referred to as idiots.

He says the story is now being used by certain individuals to cast aspersions against him claiming that he had called the general public “idiots”.

Fiji TV is yet to comment on its next step. We will have more later today. Source: FijiVillage News

KEPA on Qiliho's Study Move: “The way public of Fiji has been informed of this important career move for a constitutionally appointed officer of state, illustrates the dysfunctional nature of Bainimarama Government..."

“It is not for Brigadier-General Qiliho to reveal the details and to bypass the legal procedures and processes governing his post as Commissioner.”

Leader of the Opposition Ro Teimumu Kepa has questioned Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho’s informal announcement of his impending attendance of a 12-month training course at the Malaysian War College.

The same news report in the Fiji Sun, quoted him saying his deputy, Isikeli Ligairi, would act as Police Commissioner in the interim.

Ro Teimumu said: “The way the public of Fiji has been informed of this important career move for a constitutionally appointed officer of state, illustrates the dysfunctional nature of the Bainimarama Government.
“It is not for Brigadier-General Qiliho to reveal the details and to bypass the legal procedures and processes governing his post as Commissioner.”

“The announcement should have come through the Constitutional Offices Commission chaired by the Prime Minister. But the Commission has not functioned properly for a long time.  In fact my nominee Mr Richard Naidu resigned because of his serious concerns about the way the Commission was operating. I share those concerns. This new developments about the Police Commissioner is a perfect example of Government ineptitude.”

“As a member of the Commission, I have not received any notification of Brigadier-General Qiliho’s career move. No meeting has been called to deal with this issue and to appoint an acting commissioner.”

“Other major questions arise. Why is the Police Commissioner to study at a war college for a year? How will that improve his policing skills? Are the public to assume that his career as Police Commissioner has been cut short?  His term in office is for five years, but he’s only been in the job for eight months.”

“This entire episode, highlights yet again, Government’s unscrupulous attitude to transparency and accountability and proper procedures.” -

Fijileaks: Did Fiji One reporter distort Riyaz Khaiyum's 'idiot' comment?
"I believe your reporter deliberately did not state in his story who I was referring to as idiots and saw this as an opportunity to manipulate the situation to further his agenda. It was either that or he is protecting the anti-government and anti-Fijian elements or because he has got an axe to grind because we are seen as competition from where he resigned under very contentious circumstances. Whichever the option, it is quite apparent that all semblance of journalistic integrity, principles and ethics were totally disregarded by your reporter when he wrote his story. So much so that his story is now being used by certain individuals to cast aspersions against me claiming that I had called the general public “idiots”."

53rd Asia Broadcasting Union AGM in Bali, Indonesia.
Dear Geoff,

Last week on Friday the 4th of November the FBC held a media conference to make an official statement in an attempt to close the chapter on the Wasea Bhasha issue. I as CEO made a very comprehensive statement about the issue in regards to what had happened whilst we both were away in Bali for the ABU GA.

I also explained in great detail how the matter was handled before and after my arrival back in the country and how the host/producer of the show Nemani Bainivalu was asked for his side of the story. I also very carefully explained at the media conference Nemani’s remorse at using irresponsible words on his show and how he took full responsibility for it. I also stated that despite his explanation the FBC viewed the matter very seriously and considering the stereotyping and offensive comments made Mr Bainivalu the FBC had decided to end its contract with Mr Bainivalu.

All these facts were explained thoroughly to everyone at the media conference including the Fiji tv reporter. However to our surprise the story about the media conference on Fiji tv the same night started off by saying …”Fiji broadcasting CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has bluntly shifted the blame to Nemani Bainivalu the host and producer of the controversial tv show Wasea Bhasha. The state Broadcaster has removed the host in an attempt to put the contentious debacle to rest”. It seems your reporter in his haste to create further controversy about the issue has now got himself in a situation whereby he has deliberately twisted and manipulated the details of the media conference and got the facts of the story absolutely wrong. His claims that I had “bluntly shifted the blame…” .

As a former journalist you will see from the attached release that I read at the media conference that I did not “bluntly shift the blame”. FBC dealt with this serious matter and held responsible the person who wrote and made the irresponsible remarks on the show with subsequent action taken after a thorough investigation process. This is a blatant disregard for basic media ethics and principles on the part of your reporter. Your reporter also says that we removed the host of the show to …” put the contentious debacle to rest.” .

Again we had made it very clear in the media conference that we had ended Nemani’s contract after thoroughly investigating the matter because he had made comments that were in total contradiction to the FBC’s intention and policies as a responsible national broadcaster. We also said that Mr Bainivalu had taken responsibility for his actions and his parting with the FBC took place in an amicable and understanding manner. Of course this positive aspect of the issue was not mentioned in your reporters story. Unfortunately the matter does not end here. Your reporters next line in his story goes on to say ..”when the CEO was asked to respond to negative comments across social media, blog sites and by certain individuals. This is what he had to say…...”well I’d rather not comment about idiots.”

Your reporter then sought a response to this comment made by me from individuals and political parties. Not once did he state in his story that my response was in specific reference to two individuals and a face book group page. At the media conference I was asked a question by a reporter who was about five inches away from your reporter on what I thought about comments made about the issue on social media. I then asked the reporter who were making these comments and he specifically mentioned Fiji exposed forum, Rajendra Chaudhry and Shalendra Raju. I then said “I would rather not comment about idiots”. Your reporter of course could not have missed this conversation which was also recorded by a number of reporters present in the room including your cameras.

My very specific response was to a very specific question about individuals and a group page that are known to be fervently anti Fiji and anti-Fijian government. In fact the two individuals and anonymous comments on the Fiji exposed group page have on numerous occasions made horrible accusations and defamatory remarks against the prime minister, his government and many individuals in Fiji. The same people have also on numerous occasions encouraged certain individuals and groups to spread fear in our country calling on people to march, rebel and revolt against the authorities amid calls for general civil disobedience. These people continue to make all kinds of dangerous, defamatory and destructive comments against individuals and the Fijian government without any fear or impunity.

In fact many comments on these three Facebook pages have even called for the murder and assassination of Fijian government officials. It is these specific people that I referred to as idiots. I believe your reporter deliberately did not state in his story who I was referring to as idiots and saw this as an opportunity to manipulate the situation to further his agenda.

So much so that his story is now being used by certain individuals to cast aspersions against me claiming that I had called the general public “idiots”. A police complaint has been made regarding this however Fiji tv could also very well be dragged into this issue that was the making of one of it’s own. Taking into consideration your journalist’s blatant disregard for the basic journalistic principles of truth, accuracy, fairness and impartiality I would like Fiji tv to make an immediate retraction of the story and to apologise for the inaccuracy and harm your reporter and his Fiji one news story has caused the FBC and myself.

We expect the apology and the retraction to be broadcast on Fiji one news, to be printed in the daily newspapers and to be included on all Fiji tv social media pages. We want this done in the interest of putting an end to such blatant disregard of media ethics.

As of this moment we are only copying this email to MIDA. However Fiji tv’s failure to do as requested will result in this matter being officially taken up with MIDA and possibly with other authorities as well. Also please note that your newsroom is to cease referring to the FBC as a state broadcaster.

A state broadcaster is defined as………

”State media or state-owned media is media for mass communication which is "controlled financially and editorially by the state."[1]

These news outlets may be the sole media outlet or may exist in competition with corporate and non-corporate media. State media is NOT to be confused with public-sector media, which is "funded directly or indirectly by the state, but over which the state does not have tight editorial control.”

Since we are not controlled editorially by the state nor wholly financed by the state your reporters need to refer to the FBC as either a public service broadcaster or a GCC since we are a corporate organisation.

I sincerely hope that Fiji tv will act in an honourable manner and appropriately address this issue by close of business today.

Fijileaks: Even if we are to accept that Fiji One TV reporter deliberately omitted to mention the names of the "IDIOTS", the question still remains whether DPP will recommend charges to be laid against FBC CEO
Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, based on the so-called "Fiji Times precedent"?

We presume Hank Arts does not read, write, or understand the native Fijian language and was not aware of the "inciteful" article that was published in the Fijian language Na-i-Lalakai? And yet he was taken into custody, charged, and is now awaiting trial. The same must apply to Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum as FBC CEO. He can't claim he was away in Bali, Indonesia, so he can't be held responsible for Wasea Bhasha! Or that FBC has apologised and sacked the host Nemani Bainivalu

Fiji TV makes an unconditional apology to FBC

From Fijivillage News:

Fiji Television Limited has today made an unconditional apology to public service broadcaster, FBC regarding a story aired on Fiji One on Friday night.

CEO of Fijian Holdings Limited which is the majority shareholder of Fiji TV Nouzab Fareed confirms that they have decided to take the step today.

Fareed says he is now awaiting the report on how the journalist and editor handled the story before deciding on further action.

FBC CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum gave Fiji One till close of business yesterday to retract the story and to apologise for the inaccuracy and harm the Fiji One reporter and his story has caused the FBC and Sayed-Khaiyum.

In a letter to the Fiji TV CEO Geoffrey Smith yesterday, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that the story about FBC’s media conference on Fiji TV on Friday night started off by saying:

"Fiji broadcasting CEO Riyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum has bluntly shifted the blame to Nemani Bainivalu the host and producer of the controversial TV show Wasea Bhasha.

Sayed-Khaiyum also raised concern about this comment made by him and how it was reported.

Riyaz Sayed-Sayed-Khaiyum says his comments was a response that was in specific reference to two individuals and a facebook group page.

Remove Ban on the occasion of 100th anniversary of arrival of last ship carrying Indentured Labourers: NFP

Government should use the 100th anniversary to commemorate the arrival of the last ship carrying indentured labourers to lift the indefinite ban on entering Fiji placed on former Fiji citizens Professor Brij Vilash Lal and Dr Padma Lal

These two eminent former Fiji citizens were banished from the land of their birth seven years ago for defending democracy, justice and human rights.

It will be a symbolic gesture on the part of Government if the Head of State, President Jioji Konrote, while launching commemorative events in Suva tomorrow (Wednesday), makes an announcement to this effect.

The Indenture system commonly known as Girmit was another form of slavery. The arrival of the last ship Sutlej V on 11th November 1916 signalled the beginning of the end of indenture or slavery. Banishment from the land of one’s birth for 7 years is similar to Girmit. It is a denial of fundamental rights.

After repeated attempts to seek the truth from Government, the former Immigration Minister Timoci Natuva admitted last July that the decision to put Professor Brij and Dr Padma Lal’s names on the list of people prohibited from entering Fiji came from the Prime Minister’s Office.

This is simply against the Immigration Act 2003 where recommendations are made by the Immigration Director in consultation with the line Minister. And email correspondence between Professor Lal, Mr Natuva and the Deputy Director of Immigration confirm that the Immigration Department and the former Minister had no issues with both Professor Brij and Dr Padma Lal but were powerless to remove their names from the list despite empowered to do so under the Immigration Act.

This ban is an insult not only to Professor Lal and his wife, but also to all right-thinking and law-abiding citizens and to the Indo-Fijian community whose historical background right from the days of indenture has been well researched and documented by Professor Lal.

Professor Lal was honoured by Fiji for his contribution to the country especially his work on the Constitution Review Commission, is perceived to be a threat to Fiji’s safety and security. For his work on the Reeves Commission, he was awarded the Order of Fiji. In June last year he was honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to education, through the preservation and teaching of Pacific history, as a scholar, author and commentator.

Both have been hounded or treated like common criminals. This must stop.

Professor Lal and Dr Padma Lal have much to contribute towards the development of Fiji.  Government must recognise and accept the fact that Professor Lal is the pre-eminent historian and authority whose work in documenting the struggles and history of the Girmitiya and their descendants is unparalleled. Anyone around the world interested in the history of Fiji and indentured labourers cannot escape the eminent contribution of Professor Lal.

This is the perfect opportunity for Government to show it is a collective institution and not run on the whims of a few individuals.

REMOVE SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS  FOR BULLYING THE MEDIA – DRAUNIDALO

The NFP President, Hon Roko Tupou Draunidalo today called on the Constitutional Offices Commission and the Chair of the Electoral Commission to remove the Elections Supervisor, Mr Mohammed Saneem, for sending inappropriate tweets vilifying and bullying certain media personnel and questioning how they conduct their business, and compromising his position.

“I am greatly appalled at the public tweets from the twitter account of Fiji’s Supervisor of Elections, where he unfortunately saw fit to harangue journalists for not covering his events and covering other events in particular the complaint by concerned citizens against the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation.

“This is totally unbecoming of a Constitutional Office holder, where he is supposed to be neutral, non-partisan and dignified and has instead weighed in on media coverage surrounding the complaints against the FBC CEO."

“Furthermore, he is acting like a cheer-leader on the sidelines with more tweets on the citizen complaint and direct tweets to Fiji One journalists.”

"A free media is the cornerstone of any true democracy. The Fiji media is already over regulated and this bullying behaviour adds to the tyranny."

“By virtue of this incident, I will be raising my concerns with the Leader of Opposition to make submissions on this issue to the Constitutional Offices Commission.”

“The Constitutional Offices Commission must also look into his appointment as his initial appointment was questionable, non-transparent and did not appear before this Commission.”

“But right now this falls on the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Mr Chen Bun Young and his commissioners to deal with as this type of behaviour shows that he is unfit to conduct elections freely and fairly in 2018 if he is attacking journalists who have their own job which is to inform the public.”

“He may not like how they do their job but he has processes to follow if as a constitutional office holder HE feels aggrieved."
The 2013 Constitution section 76(3) states: “(3) The Supervisor of Elections must comply with any directions that the Electoral Commission gives him or her concerning the performance of his or her functions.”

Furthermore section 7(1) pertaining to “Exercise of powers of Supervisor” in the Electoral Decree 2014 is very clear where it says: “The Supervisor must conduct his or her duties and exercise his or her powers in an IMPARTIAL manner and in accordance with the law.”

RACE AND SECOND CLASS PAY STATUS:

Picture
$135,00 Native Fijian Interim Cabinet Ministers while two Indo-Fijians (Khaiyum and Sharma) were getting $185,000 and $150,000 respectively)

THE BAINIMARAMA-KHAIYUM REGIME HAD REDUCED ITS OWN NATIVE FIJIAN INTERIM CABINET MINISTERS IN 2010 TO SECOND-CLASS  IN PAY PECKING ORDER AFTER ABROGATING THE 1997 CONSTITUTION IN APRIL 2009.
THEY WERE PAID LESS COMPARED TO THEIR INDO-FIJIAN CABINET COLLEAGUES AND FRANK BAINIMARAMA WAS ON SALARY OF $230,000 PLUS $48,750 IN BENEFITS IN 2010

These I-taukei (NATIVE FIJIAN) Interim Cabinet Ministers were treated as second class Ministers in Bainimarama-Khaiyum's salary pecking order. Naively, they thought there was no "apartheid" in the salary payments as one confided to Victor Lal: "There was no criteria at all used in determining the salary pecking order as far as I know. None of us at the time knew how much each Minister was getting...I had assumed that we were all getting the same wages, but it appears we were not..."

WORST, Dr Jiko Luveni, the Interim Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, in 2010, was unaware that her own Government, bordering on racial and gender discrimination, was paying her a salary of $135,000 while her colleague Dr Neil Sharma, the Minister for Health, was being paid $150,000. She had been sent to the UN to introduce Fiji's combined second, third and fourth periodic reports to the 23-member expert UN Committee that ensures States parties are complying with the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. She told the expert Committee that the Bainimarama-Khaiyum Government was making significant progress in reforms to advance the equality of women and protect them from adverse and unfair discrimination. More than a year after the abrogation of its Constitution in April 2009, she told the Committee, Fiji was working with a series of newly established decrees to ensure that the rights of women were protected as the country shaped a new Constitution by 2012 before holding elections two years later.

MEANWHILE, from Fijileaks Archive:

HOLLOW WORDS WHEN COMPARED TO SALARY: Lands Minister resigns 3/2/2011:  "Minister for Lands and Mineral  Resources Mr Netani Sukanaivalu tendered his resignation to the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday. Commodore Bainimarama accepted Mr Sukanaivalu’s resignation and acknowledged the immense contributions he made toward the country’s development. The Prime Minister noted that Mr Sukanaivalu heeded Government’s call to serve his country, first as Minister for Education and then as Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, during a challenging phase in our nation’s development. “Mr Sukanaivalu contributed in a big way to the charter process and identified himself with the Prime Minister’s vision as espoused in the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress for a “Better Fiji for All,” Commodore Bainimarama said.
“His contributions in developing our education system are invaluable. Part of the change that Government has worked hard to achieve is the use of idle land for agricultural and industrial development. As Lands and Mineral Resources Minister, Mr Sukanaivalu was influential in the set up of the Land Bank and developments in the mining sector. With that Government has succeeded in expanding development initiatives to rural areas. The nation is grateful to Mr Sukanaivalu and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Commodore Bainimarama now assumes the responsibilities of the

"Your [FICAC] investigation will confirm to you that the Minister, we say, without any authority and in abuse of his power causing financial loss to the Government, had for 2016 alone used $2.6M contrary to all regulations, procedures and contrary to law. The seriousness of what he has done is that because it is without control it can lead to corruption and definitely to nepotism. Consider the $26,000 for Boarding Fees to children in Taveuni Schools? Other schools will be asking to be treated in the same way and they will be asking why the Taveuni Schools should get that benefit and not others...After you have obtained the necessary record and information from the Education Department, you will see that so far the Hon Minister has unlawfully used over $2M and it may well exceed $6M."

10th November, 2016
The Deputy Commissioner,
FICAC,
Suva.

Dear Sir,

RE: COMPLAIN AGAINST HON MINISTER OF EDUCATION- HME INITIATIVES ACCOUNT

I wish to lodge a complaint, on behalf of members of the public who have come to the opposition office, against the Hon Minister for Educations HME Initiative Account (Hon Minister for Education Initiative Account). Specifically I ask that you attend to the Ministry of Education and investigate the authorization and operation of the HME Initiative Account. I know that you have wide powers and I plead you use that to demand that all books and communications relating to the HME Initiative Account are brought to you.

I ask that you conduct your investigation with the view to the possibility of laying charges against the Hon Minister for abuse of Office and, causing financial loss and other chargers that you may do under your powers.
I wish now to outline to you some facts about the HME Initiative Account that I hope will be confirmed to you by your own evidence during your investigation to warrant the laying of those charges;

1. The setting up of the HME Initiative is unauthorized and unlawful because it is against all procedures including the Financial Management Act, it is also unbudgeted. The Ministry of Education has an Asset Management Unit that takes care of all monies approved by Budget to be used by schools that have submitted their request under approved procedures

2. HME Initiatives Account will be confirmed to you by your own investigation, is a duplicate of the Asset Management Unit (AMU). But AMU funds are all approved by Budget. HME Accounts are funds for operations purposes that have been unlawfully diverted to the HME Initiative Account. The diversion of Funds, unlawfully, to the HME Account is what, we say, amount to an Act that causes financial loss and the authorization for that by the Minister is an abuse of his power of office.

After you have obtained the necessary record and information from the Education Department, you will see that so far the Hon Minister has unlawfully used over $2M and it may well exceed $6M

For 2016 alone, the following Schools have benefited from the unlawful and unwarranted activity of the Hon Minister.

FIJILEAKS: NAKED AMBITION OF GANDHI
Lawyer turned civil rights activist Mahatma Gandhi tortured himself with the young women who worshipped him, and often shared his bed naked with them. Did that make him a sexual pervert, especially his slavish subjugation of his nieces, who he always used as his "walking sticks"?

Picture
Driven by desire? Gandhi with the two young women he used as his 'walking sticks'
Picture
The image of Mahatma Gandhi in his homespun loincloth - peering through his round wire glasses and leaning on two sari-clad women - is as fresh today as it was the day he was killed by an assassin's bullet in 1948. To the world he was the spiritual leader of India's independence movement, a pioneer of non-violent resistance and father of the Indian nation.

He inspired civil rights movements everywhere - as well as today's most charismatic political leaders, including Mandela and Obama.

Gandhi: Naked Ambition claims that Gandhi, a London trained lawyer-turned-guru, was a ruthless cult leader who enslaved his followers with such bizarre sexual demands that it became difficult for many people to take him seriously, even during his own lifetime.

The book's author, Jad Adams, even goes so far as to suggest that the Draconian practices instituted by this iconic figure in the ashrams he founded prompted the perverted 20th-century cults of Jim Jones in Jonestown, Guyana, and David Koresh in Waco, Texas - both of whom used their mesmeric sexual appeal to reduce their followers to almost slavish subjugation.

Though apparently frail and undernourished, like many ambitious men Gandhi was highly sexed - and wrote quite openly about the fact.

But it was the peculiar nature of the rigorous exercises he instigated to try to contain his huge appetites that many people considered so unacceptable.

Gandhi always said his obsession with sex started when he was married off at the age of 13 to a girl just one year older.

The son of a prime minister in the state of Porbandar, as a child Gandhi's extreme fastidiousness was the only indication there was anything unusual about him.

An indifferent pupil - small, frail and afraid of ghosts, snakes and the dark - he despised his father for giving in to his own carnal urges and became determined to control his own.

From the outset, he claimed that he never wanted to get married - he was taken out of school for a year to prepare for the event, and thought it a total waste of money.

The new revelations are made in Jad Adams's book

But mainly he was concerned that he and his bride Kasturba, the daughter of the local mayor, were far too young - even though teenage marriage was by no means unusual.

For the rest of his life, Gandhi remained angry with his father for marrying him off while he was a child. In fact, he said that on his wedding night, he and Kasturba (affectionately called Ba) were far too shy to face each other.

Yet, having been told the facts of life by his brother's wife, the couple seem to have had no trouble consummating their relationship.

Thereafter, Gandhi never tired of complaining that they had such an active sex life that there was no time for what he would have much preferred to do - which was to educate the illiterate Kasturba.

'I am sure that, had my love for her been absolutely untainted by lust, she would be a learned lady today,' he said.

But it was what happened on the night his father died that marked him forever.

Gandhi, then 16, left the sick old man's bedside in order to rush home to make love to Kasturba and thereafter, he could never forgive himself for having been in the grip of lust when his father breathed his last.

To make matters worse, his wife was pregnant at the time - and the child did not survive - leaving Gandhi tortured by guilt.

By the time he went to London to study law in 1888, Gandhi had sworn a puritanical oath to touch neither wine nor meat, as well as women.

But in London his crankiness only increased.

He soon fell under the influence of the Vegetarian Society and its wealthy president, Arnold Hills, who not only believed in a diet of raw vegetables and pulses, but also preached abstinence from sex even within marriage, except for the purpose of procreation.

Gandhi returned to India in 1891 as soon as he had been called to the Bar.

And despite his determination to stay away from the wife he hadn't seen for three years, he was soon back in bed with her - and within a year their second son was born.

But it was when Gandhi went to Africa in 1893 - where he fought for the rights of Indian residents - that he really started to hone his philosophy.

When Kasturba joined him in his newly-founded ashram three years later, she was horrified at the harshness of the lifestyle he had adopted. Gandhi's asceticism dictated that she could have no servants and must empty her own chamber pot.

He had learned to do his own laundry, cut his own hair - and even studied a childbirth manual so he could deliver their subsequent sons himself.

Gandhi had become obsessed with chastity, as well as how to control his potent urges - and his experiments in self-restraint were quite extraordinary.

At his ashram, men and women were housed separately, yet he encouraged the young to bathe and sleep together.

'I sent the boys reputed to be mischievous and the innocent young girls to bathe at the same time,' he boasted, explaining carefully to them they were not to succumb to temptation. If ever they strayed, the vigilant Gandhi himself was present to adjudicate.

At bedtime, everyone slept together on the verandah with their beds just 3ft apart - and Gandhi in the middle. When nature got the better of them, he punished the girls by cutting off their long hair.

When one of his own sons strayed with someone else's wife, Gandhi imposed a seven-day fast on him, saying: 'If he dies in the process it will not be a matter for regret'.

By 1906, Gandhi had taken the Hindu vow of brahmacharya - chastity. At the age of 36, he was determined to be celibate.

Mahatma Gandhi took a vow of celibacy at the age of 36

'It is the duty of every thoughtful Indian not to marry,' he said. 'In case he is helpless in regard to marriage, he should abstain from sexual intercourse with his wife.'

When he finally returned to India in 1915, the rules at his new ashram were even more stringent. Gandhi no longer felt sex was permissible on any level - even for procreation.

His advice to husbands and wives was not to sleep in the same room - and, if they felt an urge, to take a cold bath.

But while he insisted on other people sticking to his Draconian rules, Gandhi didn't always observe them himself.

Despite his frail appearance he was an attractive man, according to one woman who lost her heart to him.

'I caught a glimpse of him in the midst of silks and brocades, frills and sparkling jewels. He was dressed in a coarse khaki (handspun) dhoti and looked like a small-time tailor who had wandered in by mistake . . . He became my father, my mother, my boyfriend, my girlfriend, my daughter, my son, my teacher, my guru.'

Women of all sorts flung themselves at him, and some became important to him. In middle life, he fell for Saraladevi Choudhurani, a Bengali nationalist activist, and his attraction to her was such that he even confessed that he was toying with breaking his own rules.

Saraladevi provided the intellectual companionship his wife never could - and he wrote to a friend calling her 'my spiritual wife'.

Gandhi wrote many affectionate letters to Danish missionary Esther Faering

The couple were so close that whenever she visited the ashram terrible jealousies were aroused. The other women criticised the time he spent alone with her and how she was allowed off the most distasteful chores.

In the end, it was Gandhi who ended the relationship - but there were other women, including the Danish missionary Esther Faering to whom he wrote many affectionate letters and the English admiral's daughter Madeleine Slade, who took the name of Mirabehn, and waited on him hand and foot.

Although he proclaimed his abstinence, he still managed to be extremely intimate with many of his women.

Despite the diet of fruit and nuts that he believed reduced his sexual urges, he was habitually constipated and would spend hours in the bathroom, feeling no shame in encouraging them to come and visit him during his sessions on the commode.

Afterwards, they would massage him with mustard oil and lime juice while he lay naked before them.

By 1936, Gandhi was already so venerable that everyone called him Bapu - Father. By then it had become his habit to take walks leaning on two girls, usually a pair named Abha and Sushila, whom he referred to as his walking sticks.

His first question to them each morning was always: 'Have you had a good bowel movement this morning, sisters?'

The teenage Abha was married to his great-nephew. Gandhi admitted that it was very dangerous sleeping close to her without wanting sex - but also conceded that it was a 'very worthwhile experiment'.
As for Sushila, he had known her since she was six when she had sat on his lap and he had asked her mother to gift the girl to him.

After taking a medical degree, Sushila returned to the ashram - and became his personal physician. Gandhi often slept in the same bed as her, but Sushila admitted that 'there was nothing special about sleeping next to Bapu . . . I used to sleep with him just as I would with my mother'.

She elaborated: 'He might say: "My back aches, put some pressure on it." So I might put some pressure on it or lie down on his back and he might just go to sleep.' She confirmed that this was not part of the chastity experiment, but more of a natural cure.

Despite the way it looked to other people, none of this seemed like self-indulgence to Gandhi, who followed each of his obsessions with the same religious ardour: He never spoke on Mondays, which were designated silent days.

And he clung to his limited diet, too, even though it was taking a terrible toll on his physique and all his teeth were falling out. If he fell ill, he pushed himself to fast more - and insisted that his children and wife do the same, even when they were so weak they seemed on the point of death. In many ways it's astonishing that they all survived.

Disgusted by his innate lust, Gandhi would try to distance himself from the women - but he was soon sleeping next to them again - and, what's more, blaming his surrender on them. 'I could not bear the tears of Sushila,' he said.

In September 1938, to counter their criticism, he wrote a circular letter to all the girls explaining the innocent procedure that he implemented when he took a bath with Sushila.

'While she is bathing, I keep my eyes tightly shut,' he maintained. 'I do not know the manner of her bathing, whether she bathes naked or with her underwear on. I can tell from the sound that she uses soap. I have seen no part of her body that everyone here will not have seen.'

Incredibly, the long-suffering Kasturba seems to have taken all this in good part, though relations with his sons became more and more strained.

Gandhi had long had an indifference to his children because they were the product of his despised sex life - and when they, in turn, became sexual beings themselves, he was revulsed.

Understandably, they did not respond well - and his alcoholic eldest son went so far as to use brothels openly in order to humiliate his father.

When Kasturba died in Gandhi's arms in 1944, following more than 60 years of married life, the old man was moved to even more extreme experiments of his form of chastity - which became a source of great concern to those who were looking to him for political guidance.

'I deliberately want to become a eunuch mentally,' he explained to them - as he started sharing his bed with his friends' wives.

At this point it seems that he might have resumed some of the more perverse sexual experiments he had tried with Kasturba, in which he deliberately put himself into increasingly arousing situations to prove mind over matter.

Whenever anyone criticised him, he would defend himself saying that to give up his habits now would be to admit that his whole life had been a failure.

As he reiterated again and again, there was no difficulty in an impotent man staying away from women - the trick was for one with powerful sexual urges to resist them.

To make things even more tempting - and his self-control therefore that much more of a triumph - he took a much younger woman to his bed, spurning the faithful Sushila who was utterly distraught to find herself banished from his side.

The new girl was Manu Gandhi, his great niece, who had been cared for by Kasturba when she lost her own mother.

Gandhi wrote to Manu, saying his ambition for her was that she should remain a virgin till the end of her life.

'We may both be killed by the Muslims at any time and must put our purity to the ultimate test so we know we should be offering the purest of sacrifices and so we should now both start sleeping naked.'

He was sleeping with her in the nude - and the rather more reluctant Abha (who insisted on keeping her clothes on) - till the end. In fact, the devoted pair were walking either side of him when the assassin's bullet - fired by a Hindu - finally shot him dead.

The then young lawyer Mahatma Gandhi's letter [below] in Gujarati to his wife from inside a South African prison in 1909, urging her to stay strong despite his absence, for injustice has to be confronted, even if it means spells in prison. The original letter is in Victor Lal's possession, who has completed a manuscript titled
The Rule of Law in the Making of the Mahatma - M. K. Gandhi
As A Lawyer in South Africa, 1893- 1914

DECEIVING PASSENGERS?: 'If you call up Fiji Airways call center, they will book ticket for you without telling you that they will actually fly you to Nadi and then put you on bus to Suva. Yes, that's what they are doing.'

"Then from Nadi they put a couple of the business class customers onto the connection flight which has only a few seats anyway. They then take the rest of the passengers and put them on a BUS to Suva. If that is the case, then why sell the international flights to Suva? They should just sell the flights to Nadi and let the customer decide."

Dear Fijileaks Editor

Fiji Airways is deceiving 1000's of customers on a weekly basis by selling them the Sydney to Nausori flights and the Auckland to Nausori flights.

They are doing this even when they are aware that the Nausori Airport will be down for the next few months.

If you call up Fiji Airways call center, they will book a ticket for you without telling you that they will actually fly you to Nadi and then put you on the bus to Suva. Yes, that's what they are doing.

They sell the ticket, either SYD-SUV-SYD or the AUK-SUV-AUK but fly you to Nadi. Then from Nadi they put a couple of the business class customer's onto the connection flight which has only a few seats anyway. They then take the rest of the passengers and put them on a Bus to Suva.

If that is the case, then why sell the international flights to Suva? They should just sell the flights to Nadi and let the customer decide.

"The impact Osea Kolinisau had on the game of sevens in the last two seasons outclassed any performance by Seabelo Senatla [of South Africa] and they are disappointed Kolinisau was not awarded the Sevens Player of the Year"

The Fiji Rugby Union is in the process of expressing their concerns and disappointment to World Rugby after the World Rugby Awards yesterday.

After missing out on all three awards, the Fiji Rugby public was disappointed as well as other fans around the world who have expressed their thoughts on social media.

The FRU says while it respects the achievement of the All Blacks during the year, they strongly believe that the impact of the Fiji 7s team winning back to back World Sevens Series titles and more importantly winning the Gold Medal at the Rio Olympic Games had a far greater impact to the game of rugby globally.

In a statement, the Fiji Rugby Union says the Fiji Sevens team with the limited resources available to them have outperformed any other rugby team in 2016.

It says the Rugby World expects the All Blacks to do well every time because they have all resources available to them.

The Fiji Rugby Union also says the impact Osea Kolinisau had on the game of sevens in the last two seasons outclassed any performance by Seabelo Senatla and they are disappointed Kolinisau was not awarded the Sevens Player of the Year.

SHAFTED just like Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum did with PAY: Fiji players disappointed at 'pocket money' match fee of just £400 each, as England are expected to pocket £22,000 each from Twickenham clash on Saturday

Fijileaks: Bainimarama should donate all his travelling allowance to the rugby players. After all, his appointment also as Foreign Minister is one big financial scam on his part; also it allows Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum to run around with "tikka" on his forehead to woo and bribe Indo-Fijian voters as acting Prime Minister of Fiji

* Fiji's players will earn just £400 each for match against England
* By comparison, England's players will earn £22,000 for  the match
* The Twickenham showpiece is expected to generate up to £10million
* The RFU have only agreed to give Fiji £75,000 as a gesture of goodwill
    * Host nations are not obliged to share any revenue with their opponents

Fiji's players are set to earn just £400 each for Saturday's sold-out Test against England after the RFU turned down their request for £150,000 of the bumper revenue.

The Twickenham showpiece is expected to generate up to £10million, but England chiefs have only agreed to give £75,000 as a gesture of goodwill to the cash-strapped Pacific Islanders.

Eddie Jones' stars will earn £22,000 each and Sportsmail understands the Fiji camp are deeply disappointed with the settlement offered to them by the world's richest union.Host nations are not obliged to share any revenue with their opponents, but Fiji feel they deserve more of a cut because England have not played in Suva since 1991.

A source told Sportsmail: 'It's fine for the big nations like South Africa because they get their pay day when England go back to play in Durban and Johannesburg.

'These guys rarely come to play in Fiji so there's very little revenue there. It's not reciprocated. The Fiji players are only getting pocket money. They're disappointed.

'A £150,000 allowance would have gone a long way because Fiji Rugby are working on a shoestring. They have a limited amount of kit because of things like excess-baggage costs.'

Due to funding shortages, the squad are believed to have used a free training pitch while in camp in Toulouse, where they stayed in Ibis hotel rooms costing less than £50 a night. RFU CEO Ian Ritchie signed off the deal with his Fijian counterpart, having recently earned a £100,000 bonus after helping generate a £407.1m turnover in 2015-16.

World Rugby pay for Fiji's economy airfare, while the tier-one host union are obliged to pay for the cost of hotels, food and coach travel during their time in England.

Furthermore, the Fijian union are fighting to keep hold of emerging players because of the talent drain sparked by the three-year residency rule.

Fijian youngsters are being poached by foreign scouts, with Ben Ryan, the Olympic Sevens-winning coach, comparing the unregulated market to the 'Wild West'.

Nathan Hughes is the latest Fijian to qualify through residency, with the Lautoka-born No 8 due to make his full England debut on Saturday against his country of birth.

Wasps forward Nathan Hughes is the latest Fijian to qualify for England through residency
England back-row forward Nathan Hughes says choosing to play for Eddie Jones' side over Fiji, the country of his birth, "wasn't the hardest decision".

The 25-year-old made his England debut from the bench during Saturday's 37-21 victory over South Africa.
Having been at Premiership side Wasps since 2013, he qualified for England via the three-year residency rule.

"I have no qualms. I can say England is my home now and I feel English because I've played for my country," he said.

"It is the thing that provides my food, my shelter. Why not play for your country that I live in?" Hughes told BBC Radio 5 live.

Hughes, who could make his first start for England against Fiji on Saturday, denied his decision was financially motivated.

A new £20m deal will see England players receive more than £20,000 per Test match, excluding bonuses, while Fiji's squad are paid £60 a day.

"To play for England is not all about money. It is about representing the country and representing where I live and where I play my rugby," he said.

"I said to my wife: 'If I play for Fiji I will be travelling back and forth. If I play for England I'm here and you will be here.' It wasn't the hardest decision."

Hughes added that he had received support from friends and family in Fiji when he made his England debut.
"There was a lot of videos and cheering and stuff sent to me," he said. "People were saying: 'Everyone's wearing the Red Rose here in Fiji.'" Source: BBC News
